    I'm pretty sure that if you record a cover and charge for it, then you have to pay the original artist a fee.

    No one seems to care if you cover it live because that happens all the time and I've never heard of anyone asking permission.

    Now, the question is, if they had given out the cover album for free on the net, would Prince still have slapped lawsuits on them?

    Probably, yes. Because he's an obsessed freak.

    Not so sure about the legal implications of that though. Web stuff is hazy.

    what's the real deal when recording a cover? do you require the artist's permission or do you just have to pay some sort of fee and then can record the cover whether the artist likes/wants you to cover it or not? i've never had a straight answer on this.
