Garrison (An Garastún in Irish) is a small village in County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland, at the eastern end of Lough Melvin. In the 2001 Census it had a population of 357 people. It was a thriving town before "The Troubles" when it was cut off from the Republic of Ireland after the roads were blown up by the British Security Forces in an attempt to stop the transportation of explosives into Northern Ireland. When cross-border business halted, the town suffered from lack of trade and went into decay. A further IRA campaign displaced a sector of the population and bombed many of the remaining buildings. The British government decided to provide funds to rebuild in the early ninties. It is only since the roads reopened in 1994 that Garrison has found its feet again. This video recalls a visit to the village by Patrick Treacy in the summer of 1993.

Nearly all the videos on youtube are self indulgent in one way or another. This one obviously struck a chord with some! It is the self indulgent little videos we all play in our heads which cause most of the trouble in the world.... one man's self indulgence is another man's cause??

  • I'm sure. Research ...

I'm sure. Research carried out in the west of Ire. is a huge bone of contention for some. Google endogamy/exogamy, consanguineous marriage and it should bring up something. If really interested read Ireland: A Sociological Profile (Clancy et al). I'll send you a private message next week with a book list if you'd like. This isn't the place for the discussion.

  • I should qualify ...

I should qualify the above reply..Connemara used to have... It is still possible for first cousins to marry in Ireland. Genetic defects among travellers is currently under research. As I said a huge topic!!

  • Precisely!! ...

Precisely!! Connemara had the biggest tally for genetic defects in Europe. It was only then that the law was changed and marrying consanguine(blood)relations became illegal. I think it was the 70s. It's still going on in the travelling community today. This is too big a topic for 'comments'. Land is not the only issue. It can also occur to keep a religion, or bloodline 'pure'.

  • Ireland in the 70s ...

Ireland in the 70s was a very different place. Some people left for work or education but mostly they stayed. In rural Ireland, exogamy (marrying outside the family/clan) was still frowned upon. This was to do with keeping the land in the family. Those who left still had very close ties with the community of their youth. Garrison and places like it are different because literally overnight the life blood of the community (employment) is taken away.

  • That happens all ...

That happens all over Ireland. The young people think they'll never get out of the place because there's nothing for them to do there. I don't see what would make garrisson any different. The bombings were probably terrible but at the end of the day the youth still would have left. The guy who made the vid did.

  • I presume the ...

I presume the social impact of the situation was huge for all concerned. The villagers to whom the tourist trade gave employment, the pubs/shops(?) whose clientele suddenly had less disposable income, and, last but not least, the parents who watched their children leave to find employment elsewhere!

  • Many places in ...

Many places in Fermanagh i.e. (the Killyhevlin Hotel) were. Although continually rebuilt, they had a trading clientele to make it financially worthwhile. The isolation of Garrison after the road closures (it is 500 yards from the border!) meant it illogical to set up a hospitality type business. This is a high dependence tourist area. Belleek village (only 3 miles away) is Northern Ireland's biggest tourist attraction.

  • Amazing but ture!!. ...

Amazing but ture!!. I suppose in the period there was no point in providing money until things started to settle. The location where they are rebuilding was actually a hotel blown up by the IRA as they allowed security forces on the premises. The other hotel beside it had been near an old RUC barracks and it burned down in mysterious circumstances.

  • We know their dream ...

We know their dream; enough To know they dreamed and are dead. And what if excess of love Bewildered them till they died? I write it out in a verse -- MacDonagh and MacBride And Connolly and Pearse Now and in time to be, Wherever green is worn, Are changed, changed utterly: A terrible beauty is born.
Very apt perhaps but I think the music you chose allows the video to tell it's own story.

It's a beautiful day, Don't let it get away
It's a beautiful day, And the battle's just begun, There's many lost, but tell me who has won, The trench is dug within our hearts, And mothers, children, brothers, sisters torn apart, You love this town, Even if that doesn't ring true, You've been all over, And it's been all over you.....!

  • Thanks for that. ...

Thanks for that. You really do need to see the idyllic tranquility and panoramic views of Garrison in "Summer's evening on Lough Melvin" first to appreciate this piece of film. It is certainly contrasting in every aspect. I possibly should have instead included Yeat's words to "A terrible beauty is born!"
